Soft tissue and Bone Augmentation

Once a tooth has been extracted, the remaining bone in the jaw undergoes a process of remodelling (“shrinking”). This causes changes and a loss of bone height and width in the area. This results in a situation where there is not enough bone to place a dental implant. This can also impact the quality and the amount of soft tissue (gum) in the area. What is soft tissue augmentation? Soft tissue augmentation (grafting) involves procedures that the periodontist will perform to improve the quality, thickness and amount of soft tissue in the area where your implant is going to be placed. These procedures are also performed around teeth for those patients presenting with gum recession and severe tooth sensitivity. What is bone augmentation? Bone augmentation involves procedures to increase the width and height of the bone in an area, so that an implant can be successfully placed. There are numerous techniques that your periodontist can use to create more bone for your dental implant. These procedures can be performed prior to implant placement or can occur during implant placement, depending on your clinical situation. In cases of severe bone loss in especially the posterior maxilla (back aspect of your top jaw) more extensive surgical procedures such as sinus augmentation may be required. How will I know if I need soft tissue or bone augmentation? During your consultation visit with your periodontist a 3D CBCT scan will be thoroughly assessed to determine the bone height and width available for the placement of your dental implant. In cases where there is not enough bone, bone augmentation will be required. The periodontist will also measure the amount of soft tissue in the area and can then advise you if soft tissue grafting is also required. What products are used for soft tissue and bone augmentation? There are multiple products available on the market to augment (replace) the bone and soft tissue you have lost. These materials all have different properties and some materials are better suited to specific clinical scenarios. Your periodontist will advise you on which products are the best choice in your situation. In some cases bone and soft tissue can also be harvested from other parts of your own mouth and then subsequently placed in the area where it is needed to place the implant.
